The Distribution Blueprint: What It Takes to Turn Great Beer Into Scalable Growth

*AS PUBLISHED BY THE BREWERS ASSOCIATION

Most breweries approach distribution the same way they approach brewing, by leading with the product and trusting that quality will carry the day. It won't anymore.

I spent eight years running an independent wholesaler in Western Pennsylvania. In that time, I watched dozens of brands come through our portfolio. The ones we invested in, fought for, and built with were rarely the ones with the most interesting liquid. They were the ones that showed up with a clear plan - who their consumer was, what brands they were competing against, and how they’d get consumers to make the switch. That clarity is what turned our sales team from passive order-takers into active partners.

That's the argument that I made and the blueprint that I laid out in a piece I recently wrote for the Brewers Association's. The craft beer market has never been more competitive, and the window for building something meaningful hasn't closed, but the path forward looks different than it did a decade ago. Distributors don't need more brands. They need brands that make it easier to sell, easier to execute, and easier to win.
